We are so confident in the quality crafted into our 17.5-µF Capacitors, each comes with a 2-Year Warranty.
*Internal Bleed Resistor safely depletes the energy stored in the Motor Run Capacitor once the main power source is disconnected from the STP, thereby rendering the Capacitor incapable of becoming an ignition source; which is particularly critical when in an explosive atmosphere (e.g., STP sump, STP manhole, etc.).
DO NOT INSTALL A GENERIC (NON BLEED RESISTOR) MOTOR RUN CAPACITOR
in a
Red Jacket
®
STP!
Potential consequences of installing a generic capacitor in an STP include:
~ property damage, injury and/or death caused by fire and/or explosion;
~ penalties by Local, State and/or Federal authorities having jurisdiction (e.g., “Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970");
~ voiding of STP warranty, due to the installation of an improper replacement component; and
~ increasing sparking and arcing of the contacts in the STP’s Line Contactor Relay (e.g., Red Jacket
®
Part Numbers 017-061-1 and 014-723-1), thereby decreasing the reliability and service life of the Relay.
~ DO NOT install a 25
µF Motor Run Capacitor in a 1/3HP or 3/4HP STP. Doing so, will increase motor noise and shorten the service-life of the STP.
Our 17.5µF Motor Run Capacitor is
proudly
manufactured in the United States of America and is UL certified, Canadian Standards Association (CSA) 222.2 No. 190 recognized, and Electronic Components Industry Association (ECIA) EIA-456-A compliant. In addition,

Safety First
:
As with any product, there is information that service providers and others should know before replacing a Motor Run Capacitor. In an effort to educate our eBay patrons, the following Safety First section is presented for review. The information in this section is not intended to be absolute nor does it include all eventualities or circumstances, but it is provided to highlight activities that may require consideration before and after replacing a Motor Run Capacitor, and the level of risk associated with an activity.
Safety First Definitions
:
IMPORTANT
: Attention required to avoid damaging equipment or the environment. For example, fuel leakage from damaged equipment could negatively impact the environment, or present fire or explosion hazards.
CAUTION
: Using improper procedures or practices that could result in personnel injury.
WARNING
: Unsafe conditions associated with improper procedures or practices that could result in significant injury including death.
DANGER
: Immediately hazardous conditions that can result in death.
Safety First Activities
:
IMPORTANT
: The Motor Run Capacitor is hermetically sealed and contains no serviceable components. If a Motor Run Capacitor fails, consult Local, State and Federal codes regarding proper disposal.
IMPORTANT
: A Red Jacket
®
STP requiring a new Motor Run Capacitor may be located in close proximity to volatile vapors and/or liquids typically associate with motor fuels or other volatile fuels or chemicals. In consideration that volatile vapors and liquids are capable of supporting a fire and/or producing an explosion, recognized industry standards [e.g., Local, State and Federal laws/codes, Red Jacket
®
guidance/instruction documents (e.g., Bulletin RJ-23-41, etc.), National Fire Protection Association publications 30, 30A, 70, etc.] are to be followed when replacing a Motor Run Capacitor.
IMPORTANT
: When replacing a Motor Run Capacitor, inspect the STP for damage and missing parts, and ensure that the Motor Run Capacitor compartment is free of liquids. In addition, ensure that the O-Ring sealing the Capacitor compartment is either replaced or determined to be acceptable for reuse.
CAUTION
: Do not solder directly to the terminals on the Motor Run Capacitor. If soldering is performed, the liquid tight seal between the Capacitor Case Top and terminals may leak and/or the connections inside of the Capacitor may fail creating the potential for a fire and/or explosion.
CAUTION
: Personnel injury or property damage may result if a Motor Run Capacitor fails due to a mechanical or electrical disruption. Subsequently, in the event of a failure, an explosion and/or expulsion of Coolant/Heat Transfer Fluid could occur. Contact with Coolant/Heat Transfer Fluid and/or related vapors are to be avoided. In the event of accidental contact with the skin, eyes or oral ingestion, actions may be required as follows:
Skin Contact
: May cause irritation, flush and wash thoroughly with soap and water immediately.
Eye Contact
: May cause irritation, contact lenses must be removed immediately; after which, the open eye(s) should be immediately flushed with large amounts of water. Seek medical attention if irritation persists.
Oral Ingestion
: As an interim emergency measure, administer warm water or milk to rinse mouth. Do
not
induce vomiting unless directed by medical personnel, and immediately seek medical attention.
Vapors
: Avoid inhalation of vapors, ventilate area thoroughly and go to fresh air. If breathing difficulties are present, seek medical attention.
WARNING
: Always secure the work area surrounding an STP by deploying appropriate barricades, to alert others of the work in process and protect service personnel from vehicular traffic.
DANGER
: Follow all Local, State and Federal codes pertaining to the installation of a Motor Run Capacitor which includes Lock-Out and Tag-Out protocols (e.g., 29 Code of Federal Regulations Part 1910.147) of electrical circuit(s) and other energy sources associated with an STP and related equipment. If an electrical circuit breaker(s) is left in the “ON” position, a potentially lethal electrical shock and/or spark could result, and provide an ignition source for a fire and/or explosion. Never turn “ON” or otherwise energize an electrical circuit(s) or other energy source until all service work is performed and all equipment covers are properly reinstalled. For additional and more complete safety information, refer to Red Jacket’s
®
STP Service Manual,
Red Jacket’s
®
Service and Parts Manual 577013-830 and other related documentation.
DANGER
: Before entering an STP containment sump (e.g., to replace a Motor Run Capacitor, etc.), implement Permitted Required Confined Space Entry or Non-Permit Required Confined Space Entry procedures, as appropriate, per 29 Code of Federal Regulations Part 1910.146, to avoid potential hazards (e.g., inhalation, entrapment, electrocution, etc.) associated with Confined Spaces.
DANGER
: Prior to replacing a Motor Run Capacitor that is either known to not be equipped, or is suspected of not being equipped with an Internal Bleed Resistor - deplete the electrical potential stored in the Capacitor (e.g., connection of an appropriately sized and designed external Resistor-Shunt or other appropriate method) prior to removal. To prevent a potential shock hazard, and/or fire/explosion hazard, it should
never
be assumed that a Capacitor is adequately depleted or otherwise discharged until tested and verified.
Proposition 65 Warning
:
Proposition 65 requires that businesses display a Warning for listed chemicals unless exposure is low enough to pose “no significant risk” of cancer to the user or is significantly below levels observed to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm. By means of the Proposition 65 Warning protocol, Californians are provided with information to make informed decisions about the products they purchase and use. However, please note that products with the Proposition 65 label, does not necessarily classify a product as being in violation of any product safety standards or requirements, because Proposition 65 is more of a “Right-to-Know” law than an actual product safety law.
Based on the above, ACS, Inc. has elected to display the Proposition 65 warning on select products based on the possible presence of one or more listed chemicals. Although exposure from our products may not exist, or may be negligible, or may be well within a “no significant risk” level to the user, the actual level of exposure has not been assessed. In consideration that our Motor Run Capacitors are intended to be installed inside of a sealed housing, the end user has no risk of exposure. However once testing is performed, ACS, Inc. may elect to curtail Proposition 65 warnings altogether, where the level of exposure has been conclusively quantified as being under acceptable published limits.
